From the history of the breed:
One of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It is believed that the ancestors of Afghan Hound came to Afghanistan from Persia (Iran). In Afghanistan, these dogs acquired their unique features - long silky coat and tail with the ring curl at the end. Afghan Hounds, which were the favorite dogs of Afghan nobility, were brought to the UK by the English soldiers at the end of the second Afghan campaign (app. 1890).
Afghan Hounds were first shown at the dog show in London in 1907, where they gained high popularity and huge success. Exactly after the dog show in 1907 the breeding of Afghan Hounds started officially. In the 80s of the XX century Afghan Hounds were at the peak of their popularity.
Nowadays these are no longer used for hunting. Thanks to their incredible appearance they became highly desirable and popular show dogs.

General appearance:
A dog gives the impression of strength and dignity, combining the features of a high-speed powerful dog. Head held proudly. Height:
Males - 27-29 inch (69-74 cm), females - 25-27 inch (62-69 cm).
Weight:
Males and females - 55-66 lb (25-30 kg).
Coat:
Long and thin hair on the chest, sides and legs. In mature dogs from shoulder backwards and along the saddle, hair is short and close. On the forehead the hair falls with silky locks, but the hair is short on the head. Ears and legs are well coated with long and rich hair.
Color:
All colors are allowed.
Head:
The skull is elongated but not too narrow, with prominent occiput. The front part of the head is long, the stop is smooth. The forehead is covered with the abundant long hair. Nose is preferably black.
Ears:
Hanging, thick at the base, set low, tight-fitting to the head, covered with long silky hair. Eyes:
Dark is preferable, golden color is allowed, almost triangular in shape, slightly slanting.
Neck:
Long, strong, high set.
Teeth:
Strong, well set, scissor bite; level bite is allowed.
Body:
The back is flat and muscular. The loin is straight, strong, short. The croup has a slight slant.
Chest:
Broad and deep.
Belly:
Tucked up.
Tail:
Not too short, low set, with a ring on the end, raised when in action, sparsely feathered.
Limbs (front and rear):
Forequarters: shoulder blades are long, sloping, well-muscled. Forearms are straight, well boned. When viewed from the front they are in the same line with the shoulders. The elbows are held tightly to the chest.
Hindquarters: powerful and well angulated.
Attractive features:
Afghans have an independent character, they are full of dignity, adores comfort.
Despite the excellent manners at home, Afghan is still a hunting dog with an extremely hot temper, especially at a young age; he does not like familiarity and very sensitive to the unjust punishment. Very loyal, gets along well with children. But it is very important to show him who is the boss in the house.
